Description
The Brooklyn Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the East River from Brooklyn to Manhattan in New York City123. It was designed by John A. Roebling and construction began in 1869 and was completed in 18832345. At the time of its opening, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and a deck 127 ft (38.7 m) above mean high water345. The bridge was the first to use steel for cable wire and explosives were used inside a pneumatic caisson for the first time during its construction1.
